A Brief History of Daventry

The small town of Daventry has a recorded history stretching back nearly a thousand years.

In the 11th century, Daventry was the site of a fortified castle that was most likely built during the reign of William the Conqueror. The castle was the home of the powerful Bohun family, who held the title of Earls of Hereford and Earls of NorthamptonThe castle was also the residence of Edward, the Black Prince, in 1360.

In the 13th century, Daventry was granted a market charter by King John. This allowed the town to host a weekly market, which it still does today. This market has become a popular attraction offering a wide range of local produce and crafts.

In the 16th century, Daventry was a Puritan stronghold. It was home to a number of prominent Puritan leaders, including William Dowsing, who led the destruction of icons and stained glass windows in churches throughout East Anglia.

During the English Civil War, Daventry was captured by the Royalists in 1645. The town was then besieged by the Parliamentarians for three weeks before it was finally taken by the Parliamentarians
