The village and civil parish of Bugbrooke which overlooks the River Nene (pronounced ‘nen’ in this area, but ‘neen’ in Peterborough) is about seven miles south-west of Northampton and two miles from Junction 16 of the M1. As one would expect in a village with a population of around three thousand, there is a wide range of property to suit a variety of needs and budgets.
There seems to be some confusion concerning the origins of the village’s name, but it does have a brook which runs from south to north through the village before it joins the river, and the family-owned Heygate’s Mill has operated for many generations on a site where there has been a mill for around a thousand years.
Rugby, football, cricket, and badminton clubs cater for the needs of sports enthusiasts, and Sixfields, home of Northampton Town FC (“The Cobblers”) is just five miles away. The spiritual needs of villagers are met by the 13th century Anglican church of St Michael and All Angels, that is part of the benefice of Bugbrooke, Harpole, Kislingbury and Rothersthorpe, and there is a Baptist chapel in the High Street. Day to day management of the village is overseen by the fifteen-member parish council who maintain an informative website
Other amenities include The Bakers Arms, The Five Bells and The Wharf, all of which sell food and there are other food outlets and takeaways in the village or nearby. There is a primary school and a large (Campion) comprehensive school as well as a medical centre with a pharmacy and a sub-post office. In addition, there is a marina with forty moorings on the Grand Union canal, and other amenities are available in neighbouring villages.
As well as easy access to the M1, the A5 giving access to Towcester and Milton Keynes is close by.
Bugbrooke could be just the place for those with a desire for village life without having to forgo all the advantages of larger centres of population.
